S, L. Ware was born the son of Henry Ware and Jane Newcomb Ware in Garrard county, Kentucky. Althugh his brother, William Henry Ware, joined the Union Army and S. L. Ware's sympathies were with the Confederate Cause he did not fight in the War between the States. According to family sources he was born with a club foot and had difficulties walking. He was a school teacher and was reputed to have been an excellent penman. Samples of his writing support this contention. Impoverished by the war, he lost most of hie personal assets. Sometime after the war he relocated to Lincoln County, Kentucky and lived with his son Judson Ware in the Halls Gap section of that county. He died there in 1887. He was an early convert to the Restoration or Reformation religious movement led by Alexander Campbell and Barton W. Stone. On January 8, 1846 he married Julia Ann Stormes. The couple had eight children: Nathan Henry Ware, Cornelius (Andrew) Jackson Ware, Emma Ware Kendall, Belle Ware Bourne, Judson Milton Ware, Charles Pemberton Ware and Rosa Ware Boone.
Squire married Julia Ann Stormes, daughter of Nathan Hall Stormes and Unknown, on 8 Jan 1846. (Julia Ann Stormes was born on 14 Oct 1825, died on 23 Apr 1900 and was buried in Apr 1900 in Stanford, Lincoln, Kentucky.)
